You expose your eyes to a lot of potentially harmful elements throughout the year, especially during the summer months. Chlorine from swimming pools and damaging rays from the sun are just a couple of elements to be worried about. Fortunately, by being careful and proactive, you and protect your eyes this summer and still have an enjoyable season. Here are some tips from our very own optometrist.
Probably the easiest and most effective step you can take to protect your eyes from the sun's harmful UVA and UV rays is to simply wear sunglasses when you're planning on spending time outdoors. Specifically, prescription sunglasses (if you need corrective lenses) are recommended so you don't have to compromise the quality of your vision in order to spend time safely outdoors. Here at Andrew Stone Optometry, we have a variety of sunglass frames for you to choose from that are sure to suit your style.
Another way to protect your eyes when you're out in the sun is to simply wear a visor or a hat. The brim of a visor or hat can go a long way when it comes to protecting your eyes from the sun's rays, even if you're not wearing sunglasses. For the best results, wear sunglasses and a hat or visor. A hat can also provide the added benefit of protecting your scalp and parts of your face from sunburn.
While the sun is certainly a damaging factor to your eyes during the summer, chlorine can also be dangerous, especially if your eyes are exposed to it while swimming. The best way to protect your eyes from chlorine is simply to wear goggles while you're swimming. And don't forget, all these tips for eye protection also apply to your children!
