Vision problems are normal as we get older as other factors can interfere with how well we see. Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is an eye disease affecting nearly 24% of men and women ages 65 to 74 in the United States and common among the elderly. In fact, each year more than 20,000 new cases of age-related macular degeneration disease are reported. The team at Andrew Stone Optometry in Columbia, MO advises all of our patients to schedule regular eye exams for screening of diseases like AMD.

What are the Symptoms of Age-Related Macular Degeneration Disease?

People may have AMD for years and not even know due to its slow progression. Although, some eye diseases can hit us quickly and without warning, AMD affects the vision at a slower pace. There are two types AMD (Dry and Wet), and both can affect our vision differently.

Wet AMD Symptoms

  • Symptoms can appear and progress quickly
  • Objects like street signs and straight lines may appear wavy or distorted
  • Blood and fluid can leak into the macula due to the growth of abnormal blood vessels

Dry AMD Symptoms

  • Common type of age-related degeneration disease
  • Macula deterioration
  • May progress to the wet form of AMD at any time
  • Can result in blind spots and blurred central vision
