What is Glaucoma, Who is at Risk? And How is it Treated?

Glaucoma attacks the vision of three to four million Americans- about half of those affected are completely unaware that their eyesight is under threat. Here at Andrew Stone Optometry in Columbia, MO, we understand that one of the many ways we can help our patients is to provide them with the information they need to seek early diagnosis of this disease.

What is Glaucoma?

The increase of intraocular pressure (IOP) in the anterior chamber of your eye is called Glaucoma. The eye chamber is filled with fluid that usually drains out through channels. When the fluid is prevented from draining, pressure builds in the eye and on your optic nerve. When the optic nerve is damaged, eyesight is permanently lost.

Open-angle Glaucoma (Chronic) develops over time as the drainage channels slowly become blocked. 90% of cases are Open-angle and symptoms are not noticeable until damage has already occurred.

Angle-Closure Glaucoma (Acute) is much less common, develops when the channel drainage is blocked. This is a medical emergency, which causes acute pain and very rapid vision loss.

Who is at Risk for Glaucoma?

You have a higher risk of developing glaucoma if you:

Are age 60 or older

Have a family member with Glaucoma (Open-angle glaucoma is hereditary)

Have Diabetes or Hypertension

Use steroids

Have a history of eye trauma

How is Glaucoma Diagnosed?

Your optometrist will perform a comprehensive eye and vision examination, including tonometry, visual acuity measurements, retinal evaluation, and perimetry. A thorough family history will be collected, along with any symptoms you may have.

How Is Glaucoma Treated?

Medication: powerful eye drops to reduce pressure are usually the first treatment for Glaucoma. These may be beta-blockers or Prostaglandin analogs.
