How to Plan for an Eye Exam

By planning ahead for your eye checkup, you can get the most out of your visit. Eye health should never be taken for granted. At Andrew Stone Optometry in Columbia, we try to make your annual visit a pleasant and productive one. The following tips can help you maximize your eye care visit.

Make a List of Vision Problems

Make a list of any vision problems you’ve been experiencing so you can discuss these with your Columbia optometrist before your exam. It’s easy to forget these details once you’re in the eye doctor’s chair. Tell your eye doctor if you had blurry vision, poor night vision, trouble judging distances, itchy, burning eyes or any other vision issues, so he can check for causes of these symptoms.

Bring Essential Items

Be prepared to bring some essential items to the clinic to facilitate your optometry services. These items include your current eyeglasses, prescription sunglasses, contact lenses, a list of medications you’re taking, contact details for your primary physician and insurance card.

If your Columbia optometrist plans to dilate your eyes, as most eye doctors do during an annual eye exam, ask a relative or friend to come with you to drive you home as you won’t be seeing clearly for a while.

List of Questions to Ask

If you have questions about your eye health or vision, don’t hesitate to ask before, during or after your exam. We want you to be fully informed about the state of your vision. Here are some common questions you may want to ask:

  • Has my vision changed since my last visit?

  • Is my vision growing worse? If so, how can I take better care of my eyes?

  • Can I wear contacts with my prescription? Can I wear contacts all day, every day, or should I limit their use?

  • Is there something I can to improve my vision?

If you’re prescribed glasses for the first time, plan a follow-up visit with your optometrist to make sure they’re working out.
